Is Thin Film PV Technology A Good Option?

Q: “I’ve been hearing a lot about “thin film” PV technology? Is this a good option and how is it different from a regular solar panel?”

A: “Thin film technology will have its place in certain projects. The difference between thin film and standard single or multi crystalline panels is that thin film panels are just that. Thin films of various substances, some more toxic than others, vacuum deposited in extremely thin layers usually on a glass substrate. The idea is to get layers that use less material and filter a greater portion of the light spectrum than the silicon based technology uses and collects. At this time thin film has an efficiency of about 1/2 to 1/3rd that of silicon based technology. Thin film will have limitations with available space requirements on many projects. Right now with current market prices I would stick with single or multi crystalline panels as they have an extensive track record and usually a 20-25 year warranty.”

How Long Do Solar Panels Last?

Q: “How long do PV solar panels last? Do they need maintenance?”

A:  ”Their life expectancy is near 50 years. Their power out put diminishes with time usually 1/2% per year. Solar panels require very little maintenance. Cleaning off accumulations of dirt and dust from time to time will keep them producing maximum power”
